One of the trainees (now alumni) from the first Ako Torowhānui: Māori Healing Training, Jaime Mackie shared this post and gave me permission to share it with all of you. Jaime is a gorgeous healer and is offering sessions from Bibra Lake in Western Australia.
Is Romi Romi like massage?
In some ways yes. However, it is largely an intuitive practice (there is also a sequence) going to places in the body that massage generally doesn’t as these sacred release points get missed, using elbows, knees, our own body weight on the person to aid the release process.
Is it energy work like say, reiki?
An aspect of it is, it is a bit more hands on and we are a neutral vessel. While reiki comes from a prescribed energy force, RomiRomi work comes from our whatumanawa / heart space / all seeing eye / with love, we are remaining whakanoa / neutral, pure to the scared energy.
Gabrielle note: RomiRomi is much more physical than Reiki and involves many different techniques. I was recently asked this same question by Alessia on the Wild Free Well podcast, click here to hear how I answered it (at 7.50).
How do you handle doing sessions, isn’t it draining to take that on?
Not at all, it’s often invigorating as we are unattached to the outcome, from the work for our own spiritual protection and well being, the connection is one for their highest purpose which means we are not involved on that level.
Gabrielle note: Sometimes I find I get tired if I am out of alignment in some way, if I have not checked in with my own self-care. Or if I have agreed to a session out of lack, then I can feel tired, but this is rare (especially if I am practicing my own teachings).
Are you a healer?
Yes, and we do play this role in leading sessions, however this is a co-creation. We cannot do all the healing for that person, we meet them where they are and they are called to choose to let go and shift certain emotion in the body, we work from there.
Do you want to inflict pain?
The pain is different from normal perception and it often does shift like a trigger point. The intention is not to inflict pain, each part of the body and experience is linked to a deeper meaning, plus many other emotions are expressed and felt, even laughter.
We are working with Wairua / Spirit force and Mauri / Life force, connecting to Papatuanuku / Earth Mother, Ranginui / Sky Father, Io / Devine source creator, and opening up any other portals / guides / ancestors to work with us and to hold space, Tangaroa / God of the sea and seawater largely hold space
These pictures help to explain the practice, if you are curious and feeling the call then experiencing it is most powerful, as I have said previously it’s hard to put the practice into words, to honour its uniqueness to its core 🙏🏽✨
Gabrielle notes: Here’s one more question that I frequently get asked.
Can Māori and non-Māori experience this work?
This work is for everyone. Māori healing practices help with physical, emotional and spiritual aspects that people of all backgrounds experience. My teachers taught, and continue to teach all around the world with and for many people from different cultures. This work is for those who feel deeply called from deep within. I feel like often a session is a divine appointment guiding us deeper into our heart and integrity.
